What is a Functional Capacity Assessment?
A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a comprehensive evaluation of a person's physical, cognitive, and behavioural abilities in relation to work. Our occupational therapists use standardized testing and real-world simulation to determine what tasks an individual can safely and reliably perform.
FCAs are used for return-to-work planning, disability determination, injury assessment, and vocational rehabilitation. Results provide clear, objective data for employers, insurers, and rehabilitation providers.
Who Needs an FCA?
- Injured workers: Assessing capacity for return-to-work after injury or illness
- Workers' compensation: Objective documentation for claims and disputes
- Disability support: Determining functional limitations and support needs
- Vocational rehabilitation: Identifying suitable work options and job modifications
- NDIS participants: Goal-setting for work or community participation
- Legal proceedings: Objective evidence for personal injury and employment disputes
- Occupational health: Pre-employment or fitness-for-duty assessments
Our Assessment Process
1. Initial Consultation
We discuss your background, injury, current symptoms, work history, and goals. This helps us tailor the assessment to your specific situation.
2. Physical Assessment
Standardized tests evaluate strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, coordination, and pain response under controlled conditions.
3. Cognitive & Behavioural Evaluation
We assess concentration, memory, problem-solving, emotional control, and social functioning relevant to work.
4. Simulated Work Tasks
Real-world tasks simulate your actual work demands, allowing us to observe how you respond to sustained activity.
5. Detailed Report
Within 2 weeks, you receive a comprehensive report with findings, recommendations, and clear functional capacity documentation.
What's Included in Your FCA Report
- Detailed physical capacity findings (lifting, carrying, reaching, gripping)
- Cognitive and emotional functioning assessment
